I Rescued A Human Today

This article was shared with me several months ago, and it's something that I've read and thought of often. It's so true that our animals sometimes rescue us, and the more and more I talk with other dog owners who are deeply involved with their pets, the more I hear about how their animals rescued them! Everytime I read it, I get tears in my eyes thinking about all of the animals that need humans to rescue!

I Rescued A Human Today

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.

Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

  1. I have heard that one before, and think it is such a wonderful Poem. It would be so nice if we could stop the over population of dogs and cats here in the US.

  2. I've also read this poem before and I think it speaks volumes for what dogs and cats do for us rather than the other way around. I don't know what I would do without our coonhound, Daisy, and our 2 cats, Buster and Henry, because they are our best friends and they cheer us up and bring us so much joy constantly.
Don't forget to stop by to see my 2 current blogs about Lucy, the paralyzed dog, who made it up the summit of Mt. Washington! See....Lucy is a popular name for go-getters!

  5. First time I've read that one... so true. I say all the time that Corbin adopted us... and he really did! We're only lucky enough to have them allow us into their lives. I wish there were more great animal people like the bloggers we've stumbled across. Every shelter dog deserves the love of a wonderful home!

  6. Love this poem! Reposted it at Therapy Failed because Soxy really did rescue me...somehow. Please tell me that you somehow photoshopped that picture of Lucy and she wasn't really in a cage as a puppy.

BTW, we stopped by the store on Friday, but you and Lucy had taken the day off.
